How to Kickstart Your Modeling Career With Zero Experience: Your First 3 Steps

Getting into modeling with no experience at all can be pretty daunting, but every single model out there started where you are right now, from the beginning. And honestly, you just need to focus on these first three things during your first month and you will be off and running.

Step 1: Snap Some Straightforward Test Photos

Grab your phone, or get a mate to take a few snaps of you in a window with natural light. You’re after:

  1. a smiley headshot,
  2. a serious headshot, and
  3. a full-body shot in plain, fitted clothes.

There is NO need to break the bank on a photoshoot or try to look like a supermodel. Modeling agencies want to see you in your natural state. These “digitals” are the standard way of doing things and are what most agencies use when you apply.

Step 2: Do Some Legwork and Make a List of Genuinely Legit Agencies

Google “modeling agencies” and your nearest city to get started. Look for agencies that represent well-known brands and never ask for payments upfront. Then, write down 10-15 agencies in a spreadsheet that match your looks. Answer the question, are you going for:

  • commercial,
  • fashion, or
  • plus size?

Then check their websites to see what they need to see. Many agency websites will have online forms for new faces.

Step 3: Submit to Agencies The Right Way

Follow each agency’s submission guidelines to the letter. This usually means uploading your test photos along with some basic personal statistics like:

  1. your height,
  2. your clothes sizes, and
  3. your contact details.

Write a sentence saying why you want to be a model. Then, get all of your submissions in within a week. After that, just chill. It can take from about 2 to 8 weeks for many modeling agencies to get back to you.

That is basically it! There is NO need for classes, expensive photoshoots, or any of that kind of jazz. If agencies see something in you, then they should be willing to develop you from there. If you don’t get any bites after about two months, then you might want to just get some new snaps taken and try agencies in different areas. This is all about persistence and being professional. Don’t worry about trying to be perfect.
