Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born February 20, 1988) is a Barbadian singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman who spent a decade reshaping the sound of mainstream pop and R&B, and then, almost without pausing, pivoted into one of the most successful entrepreneurial careers any musician has ever built. She arrived in the United States at sixteen with a Caribbean lilt and a dancehall demo tape; by her mid-twenties she had stacked fourteen number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, sold more than 250 million records worldwide, and established herself as the kind of artist whose radio presence was so constant it felt ambient.

Her eight studio albums trace a restless creative arc: from the reggae-tinged debut Music of the Sun through the pop-R&B reinvention of Good Girl Gone Bad, the dark textures of Rated R, the dance-floor dominance of Loud and Talk That Talk, and finally the genre-defiant Anti, which ten years after its release still sits on the Billboard 200. Along the way, she became one of the most decorated artists of her generation, nine Grammys, thirteen AMAs, the MTV Video Vanguard Award, and racked up collaborations with Jay-Z, Eminem, Drake, Kanye West, Calvin Harris, and Kendrick Lamar that read like a who’s-who of 21st-century pop and hip-hop.

Since 2017, Rihanna has channeled the same instinct for identifying cultural gaps into business. Fenty Beauty launched with forty foundation shades and reset the entire beauty industry’s approach to inclusivity. Savage X Fenty did the same for lingerie. Together, those ventures made her a billionaire and the first Black woman to helm two companies each valued above one billion dollars. She headlined the Super Bowl LVII halftime show in 2023, pregnant, on a floating stage, performing a thirteen-minute hit parade for 121 million viewers, and hasn’t released a full album since 2016. The wait for R9 has become pop music’s longest-running cliffhanger, but even without new music, Rihanna remains one of the most culturally inescapable figures on the planet.

Early Life & Education

Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, and grew up in a three-bedroom bungalow in Bridgetown. Her mother, Monica Braithwaite, was an Afro-Guyanese accountant; her father, Ronald Fenty, a warehouse supervisor of Barbadian and Irish descent. She is the oldest of three siblings and has two younger brothers, Rorrey and Rajad. Music entered her life early, she started singing around age seven, but so did difficulty. Her father’s addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine dominated the household, straining her parents’ marriage and exposing Rihanna to domestic violence. The headaches she suffered as a child were so severe that doctors ran CT scans looking for a tumor. Her parents divorced when she was fourteen, and the headaches stopped.

At Combermere School in Bridgetown, Rihanna was a solid student, sharp in math and chemistry, who also served as a corporal in an army cadet program where the singer Shontelle was her drill sergeant. She won the school beauty pageant and a talent show singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero.” At fifteen, she and two classmates formed a girl group with no name and no original material. They auditioned for American record producer Evan Rogers, who was vacationing in Barbados with his wife. Rogers later recalled that the moment Rihanna walked into the room, the other two girls ceased to exist. He arranged a second meeting with Rihanna and her mother, and over the next year they traveled to his home in Stamford, Connecticut, to record demo tracks, including what would become “Pon de Replay.”

That demo landed on the desk of Jay-Z, who had just taken over as president of Def Jam Recordings. In early 2005, Rihanna, still sixteen, auditioned in his New York office. She sang Whitney Houston’s “For the Love of You,” followed by her own demo material. Jay-Z later said he didn’t want to sign songs, he wanted to sign artists, but told L.A. Reid not to let her leave without a deal. She canceled meetings with other labels, signed a six-album contract, and moved to the United States permanently. She completed her high school education through a tutor while her debut album was already in production.

Career Highlights and Milestones

Rihanna’s first single, “Pon de Replay,” hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005, and her Caribbean-inflected debut album Music of the Sun confirmed that Def Jam had found a genuine crossover talent. But it was her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), that turned her from a promising newcomer into a global force. The lead single, “Umbrella” featuring Jay-Z, spent seven consecutive weeks at number one in the U.S. and ten in the U.K., and it earned Rihanna her first Grammy. The album marked a deliberate image shift, shorter hair, darker wardrobe, harder-edged dance-pop, and established the template she would use for the next five years: relentless output, constant sonic evolution, and a new album almost every twelve months.

Between 2009 and 2012, Rihanna released four albums in four years, a pace that now looks almost superhuman. Rated R channeled personal turmoil into a darker, rockier sound. Loud swung back to euphoria, spawning three number-one singles and the inescapable “Only Girl (In the World).” Talk That Talk produced “We Found Love” with Calvin Harris, which spent ten weeks at number one and became one of the decade’s defining dance-pop tracks. Unapologetic topped the Billboard 200, her first number-one album, and gave her the slow-burn anthem “Diamonds.” By this point, Rihanna had placed more Hot 100 entries than nearly any other artist of the 2010s, and her hit rate was staggering: four number-one singles in a single calendar year in 2010, a Guinness World Record for a female artist.

Then came the swerve. After years of assembly-line release schedules, Rihanna went quiet. She left Def Jam for Roc Nation, took nearly four years between albums, and returned in January 2016 with Anti — a deliberately uncommercial, mood-driven record that opened with a spoken-word art piece and asked listeners to meet her on different terms. It was a gamble that paid off slowly and then massively. “Work” featuring Drake spent nine weeks at number one. “Needed Me” lasted forty-five weeks on the Hot 100. Anti has now spent over 500 nonconsecutive weeks on the Billboard 200, a record for a Black female solo artist, and is widely regarded as her most artistically complete work.

Since Anti, Rihanna has released music sparingly, features with Kendrick Lamar (“Loyalty,” 2017), N.E.R.D. (“Lemon,” 2017), PartyNextDoor (“Believe It,” 2020), and the Oscar-nominated “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), while building the Fenty empire and starting a family with A$AP Rocky. Her Super Bowl LVII halftime show in February 2023 drew 121 million viewers, making it the most-watched halftime performance ever. She voiced Smurfette in the 2025 animated film Smurfs and released the single “Friend of Mine” from its soundtrack. Reports in early 2026 suggest new music and a potential tour are in development, marking the tenth anniversary of Anti.
