George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou; June 25, 1963 – December 25, 2016) was an English singer-songwriter and record producer who reshaped the terms of what a pop star could be, and then spent most of his career fighting everyone, including himself, who tried to put those terms back in the box. He first arrived as one half of Wham!, delivering sun-drenched, irresistibly hooky pop that soundtracked a generation’s youth. By twenty-four, he had shed the teen-idol persona entirely, releasing Faith and becoming one of the biggest solo artists on earth, with a voice that moved between gospel-drenched soul and sophisticated pop balladry as easily as breathing.

What followed was messier and more interesting than a simple fame arc. Michael went to war with Sony over creative control, withdrew from the American spotlight, came out publicly in the late 1990s under the worst possible circumstances, battled tabloid culture, dealt with devastating personal loss, and still managed to produce some of the most emotionally direct pop music of his era. Albums like Older and singles like “Jesus to a Child” revealed an artist writing from genuine pain, not performing it. His voice, one of the most naturally gifted in pop history, only deepened with the years.

Michael sold an estimated 100 to 125 million records worldwide, won two Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023. He died on Christmas Day 2016 at his home in Oxfordshire, England, at the age of fifty-three. In the years since, his catalog has refused to fade. “Careless Whisper” has been voted the UK’s favorite song for seven consecutive years, and his music continues to accumulate hundreds of millions of streams annually, proof that the songs outlasted the headlines.

Early Life & Education

Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou was born in East Finchley, north London, the youngest of three children and the only son. His father, Kyriacos “Jack” Panayiotou, was a Greek Cypriot immigrant who had come to England in the 1950s and built a successful restaurant business. His mother, Lesley Angold Harrison, was an English dancer. The family was comfortable but not wealthy, and his father’s ambition cast a long shadow. Michael later described his relationship with his dad as adversarial in a way that fueled his own drive, telling interviewers that subconsciously fighting his father’s expectations pushed him toward becoming one of the most successful musicians in the world.

When the family moved to Radlett, Hertfordshire, the young Georgios enrolled at Bushey Meads School, where he met Andrew Ridgeley. The two bonded instantly over a shared obsession with music, Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, and a shared ambition to escape suburban life through pop stardom. They formed a short-lived ska band called The Executive before reinventing themselves as Wham! in 1981. Michael wrote virtually all of their material from the start, a detail that was obscured by the duo’s image as carefree party boys. He did not pursue higher education; by the time most of his peers were heading to university, he was already on his way to a record deal.

Career Highlights and Milestones

Wham! detonated quickly. Their debut album, Fantastic (1983), hit number one in the UK on the strength of singles like “Young Guns (Go for It!)” and “Club Tropicana.” The follow-up, Make It Big (1984), went global, spawning “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “Careless Whisper,” and “Everything She Wants”, three number-one hits in the United States alone. In April 1985, Wham! became the first Western pop act to tour China, generating worldwide media coverage. The duo was massive, but Michael was already outgrowing it. “Careless Whisper,” released as a solo credit in the UK, and the ballad “A Different Corner” proved he could operate on a level of emotional sophistication that Wham!’s brand could not contain. By June 1986, the partnership ended with a farewell concert at Wembley Stadium.

The solo pivot was swift and total. In early 1987, Michael released a duet with Aretha Franklin, “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” which hit number one in both the US and UK and won a Grammy. Then came Faith, the leather jacket, the stubble, the earring, and arguably the most successful image makeover in pop history. The album sold over 25 million copies worldwide, produced four Billboard Hot 100 number ones, and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. It was also the first album by a white solo artist to reach number one on the Billboard Top Black Albums chart, a fact that spoke to how deeply Michael’s voice operated in soul and R&B territory.

What happened next was deliberately self-destructive, in the most artistically interesting way. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 (1990) was a withdrawal from the fame machine, Michael refused to appear in his own videos, hired supermodels for the “Freedom! ’90” clip instead, and delivered an introspective album that valued craft over spectacle. It hit number one in the UK but underperformed in the US, sparking a bitter legal battle with Sony that consumed much of the early 1990s. He lost the case but eventually negotiated his exit, re-emerging on DreamWorks with Older (1996), an album born from grief, his partner Anselmo Feleppa had died of an AIDS-related illness in 1993, and his mother, Lesley, died in 1997 during the album cycle. “Jesus to a Child” and “Fastlove” both hit number one in the UK, and Older sold six million copies in Europe alone.

The late 1990s brought public turbulence. Michael was arrested in a Beverly Hills restroom in April 1998 and subsequently came out as gay, turning the humiliation into the defiant single “Outside.” He largely stepped away from the American market and released music more sporadically, Patience (2004) was his only other studio album of original material. His final years included the 25 Live Tour (2006–2008), a triumphant return to the road, and the Symphonica orchestral tour (2011–2012), which was interrupted by a near-fatal bout of pneumonia but yielded a live album that showcased his voice in its most refined setting.
