Cara Jocelyn Delevingne, born August 12, 1992, in London, is an English fashion model, actress, and musician, and the defining crossover face of the 2010s: the model who made personality the product. In an era when runway casting still prized blankness, Delevingne arrived with heavy, unapologetic brows, a comedian’s elastic face, and a tomboy-aristocrat charge that read instantly on camera and refused to switch off backstage. The camera loved the contradiction. She could hold the line of a Burberry trench with total seriousness for Mario Testino, then cross her eyes for the street photographers thirty seconds later, and the industry discovered that the second image sold the first.

Cast by Christopher Bailey in Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2011 campaign before she had walked a single show, Delevingne debuted on the Burberry Prorsum runway at London Fashion Week in February 2011 and compressed a decade of career into the four years that followed: fifty-show seasons, Victoria’s Secret slots, Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel pageants from Linlithgow Palace to the Grand Palais (whose Spring 2014 couture show she both opened and closed), contracts with TAG Heuer, YSL Beauté, and Rimmel London, and Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2012 and again in 2014. Then she did the thing supermodels are not supposed to do at twenty-two: she stepped back, on the record and on her own terms, and built the acting career (Paper Towns, Suicide Squad, Carnival Row, Only Murders in the Building) that most models never manage, and a stage and music career that almost nobody does.

Delevingne remains one of fashion and entertainment’s most-followed figures. Sober since late 2022 and candid about it, she made her West End debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret in 2024, premiered the A24-acquired Club Kid at Cannes in May 2026, and in April 2026 announced the project she says she has feared and wanted the longest: a solo music career, launched with the singles “I Forgot” and “Out of My Head” and a first headline tour across Europe, the UK, and North America, with Rag & Bone shadowing the tour as the face of its Fall 2026 campaign.

Early Life & Education

Cara Jocelyn Delevingne was born on August 12, 1992, in Hammersmith, London, and raised in Belgravia, the youngest daughter of property developer Charles Hamar Delevingne and Pandora Delevingne, a personal shopper and fixture of London society. The family tree is practically a media dynasty: her maternal grandfather, Sir Jocelyn Stevens, was a publishing executive who later chaired English Heritage; her great-grandfather Hamar Greenwood sat in Parliament; her godmother is Joan Collins and her godfather the Condé Nast executive Nicholas Coleridge. Her older sister Poppy modelled first, and the fashion world knew the surname before Cara ever stood in front of a professional camera. She has been frank that the access was real, and equally frank that access books a casting, not a career.

The polish concealed a harder childhood than the postcode suggested. Delevingne has spoken publicly about growing up around her mother’s addiction, about the depression that hit her at fifteen, and about the dyspraxia that made school a grind. She attended Francis Holland School in central London until sixteen, then moved to Bedales in Hampshire to concentrate on drama and music, and left in 2009 without finishing. Her first modelling job had come at age ten, an editorial for Vogue Italia shot by Bruce Weber alongside Lady Eloise Anson, but the professional start was slower and less gilded than the anecdote implies.

Signed to Storm Management in 2009, the London agency founded by Sarah Doukas, Delevingne worked for a year before booking a paying job and went through two full seasons of castings without landing a show, shooting ASOS catalogue work and answering phones part-time in the office of a fashion website to stay afloat. That office is where the career turned: Burberry’s chief creative officer Christopher Bailey saw her, and instead of a casting slot he handed her the house’s Spring/Summer 2011 campaign, shot by Mario Testino, before she had ever walked a runway. The order of events became her origin myth. Most models walk their way into a campaign; Delevingne was a campaign face who then had to learn to walk.

Career Highlights and Milestones

The Burberry campaign dropped in January 2011 and the catwalk debut followed a month later, at the Burberry Prorsum Autumn/Winter 2011 show at London Fashion Week. By September she was opening and closing Burberry Prorsum’s Spring/Summer 2012 show, the runway’s conferred double, in her first year of walking. The early 2012 season made her unavoidable: a Chanel haute couture debut at the Grand Palais in January, nine shows in one New York week, and a Paris run that ended at Chanel, where Karl Lagerfeld took one look and adopted her. “Cara is different. She’s full of life, full of pep,” he told Elle that season, and the relationship he began there ran the rest of his life: the Métiers d’art pageant at Scotland’s Linlithgow Palace and the Cruise show in Singapore in 2013, the Spring 2014 haute couture show she opened and closed, and the Paris-Salzburg 2014/15 campaign, for which Lagerfeld cast her opposite Pharrell Williams in his short film Reincarnation and let her sing on the soundtrack.

What made the run remarkable was less the volume, though the volume was absurd (more than fifty shows in the Spring/Summer 2013 month alone, plus Victoria’s Secret in 2012 and 2013), than what she was selling. Fashion in the early 2010s was emerging from a decade of deliberately anonymous casting, and Delevingne’s face refused anonymity: the brows nobody plucked, the goofball backstage persona, the Tumblr-era fluency that made her, by 2013, the most googled figure in fashion and the most re-blogged model on the platform. Editors called it personality; the industry balance sheets called it reach. The contracts followed the reach: TAG Heuer signed her in January 2015, YSL Beauté and DKNY campaigns ran the same year alongside a Mango campaign shot with Kate Moss, and Rimmel London made her a brand ambassador in April 2016. The British Fashion Awards named her Model of the Year in 2012 and again in 2014, the year Forbes ranked her sixth among the world’s highest-paid models.

Then came the pivot that defined her more than any cover. Her profile quietly came off Storm’s board in June 2015, psoriasis flare-ups during show seasons became public that August, and in a 2016 essay for Time she described the burnout behind the headlines, pushing back on the “quit modelling” framing while being honest about why the runway treadmill had to stop. The acting career she pivoted to had been building since a small role in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina (2012): Paper Towns (2015) made her a lead and won her two Teen Choice Awards, Suicide Squad (2016) put her inside a franchise, and Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) gave her a co-lead and a Pharrell-produced single, “I Feel Everything.” In October 2017 she publicly alleged that producer Harvey Weinstein had harassed her earlier in her acting career, one of the accounts that fuelled the industry’s reckoning; she has said the experience shaped how guarded she became about the business. Television turned out to be the durable lane: two seasons as the faerie Vignette Stonemoss in Amazon’s Carnival Row (2019 and 2023), a SAG-ensemble-nominated arc as Alice in Only Murders in the Building (2022), a season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Delicate (2023 to 2024), and her own six-part BBC documentary series Planet Sex (2022). The runway returns were reserved for meaning: Christopher Bailey’s farewell Burberry show in February 2018, and Chanel’s snow-covered Grand Palais tribute to Lagerfeld in March 2019.

The current chapter is the most personal one. After a public struggle in 2022 that she has described plainly, Delevingne entered rehab at the end of that year and has been sober since, telling Vogue in 2023 that the change was hard and worth it. What followed reads like a second debut: her West End stage debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club from March to June 2024 (a run she completed even as her Los Angeles home burned down that March), the Cannes premiere of Jordan Firstman’s Club Kid in May 2026, which A24 acquired out of the festival, and the April 2026 announcement of her first solo music project, two singles and a headline tour of intimate rooms across Europe, the UK, and North America. Rag & Bone, whose runway she first walked in 2011, signed her as the face of its Fall 2026 campaign and is documenting the tour. Fifteen years after Burberry made her a face before she was a walker, she is a musician with a fashion campaign about the music.

Trivia & Lesser-Known Facts

  • Her naturally thick eyebrows are widely credited with resetting the beauty standard of the 2010s, ending a decade of thin-brow orthodoxy on catwalks and cosmetics counters alike.

  • She voiced a pop-radio DJ in Grand Theft Auto V (2013) and later played an animated version of herself in Futurama (2023).
  • Her godmother is the actress Joan Collins, and her maternal grandfather, Sir Jocelyn Stevens, ran magazines before chairing English Heritage; she has said openly that the connections opened doors it was then her job to walk through.
  • The name of the family Prosecco label, Della Vite, means “of the vine” in Italian, a play on Delevingne, which carries the same meaning in French.
