Kylian Mbappé scored twice against Senegal to become France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud, and now has 14 World Cup goals, two behind the Klose-Messi record. He gets another opportunity today. France are heavy favorites against an Iraq side that lost 4-1 to Norway on Matchday 1 and face long odds here; a French win combined with Norway taking a point against Senegal would effectively end Iraq’s top-two hopes before Matchday 3. This is the first meeting ever between France and Iraq in an international match.
The subplot is a lineup one. France coach Didier Deschamps is expected to rotate, with reports pointing to three changes from Matchday 1: Lucas Digne in for Théo Hernández at left-back, Manu Koné in for Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Bradley Barcola, who scored on his World Cup debut as a substitute against Senegal, tipped to start. Erling Haaland scored twice on his World Cup debut against Iraq and has now scored in 11 consecutive international appearances; Norway are on three points and a win tonight would seal their place in the Round of 32. A win for Norway here, combined with France beating Iraq, would also leave Senegal needing the third-place route to advance. This is a meaningful match for Group I’s shape even before Matchday 3.
The off-field context around Senegal deserves its own line. According to reports, players are owed unpaid bonuses linked to AFCON 2025 and World Cup qualification, the squad has expressed dissatisfaction with accommodation and food conditions, and head coach Pape Thiaw is reportedly operating without an official contract and has gone months without being paid. The Senegalese Football Federation has not publicly addressed the claims. How much any of that affects what happens at MetLife Stadium is unknowable, but the situation is unusual even by the standards of a tournament with plenty of off-field noise.

11:00 PM ET: Jordan vs. Algeria, FS1
Both sides lost on Matchday 1 and both need points badly. Algeria were beaten 3-0 by Argentina, held to one shot on goal, and their federation has since filed a formal FIFA complaint over refereeing decisions in that match, with FIFA reportedly acknowledging a VAR error and sanctioning the officials involved. Jordan lost 3-1 to Austria but held them to 1-1 until the 76th minute and earned praise from Rangnick for their effort; Ali Olwan’s goal in that match was Jordan’s first-ever at a World Cup Finals. A loss for either side here would effectively end their top-two hopes. One note for anyone staying up: Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine Zidane, is expected to start in goal for Algeria.
