Saturday’s football delivered its biggest statement in Houston, where the Netherlands demolished Sweden 5-1. Brian Brobbey scored twice inside the first 17 minutes, Cody Gakpo added a second-half brace, and Crysencio Summerville rounded things off late to seal it. Elsewhere, Germany came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 on a Deniz Undav double off the bench, Japan routed Tunisia 4-0 in what was also the 1,000th match in World Cup history, and Curaçao earned the tournament’s most unlikely result: a 0-0 draw with Ecuador that gave the debutants their first ever World Cup point.
Sunday belongs to Spain and the teenager leading their revival. Lamine Yamal scored his first career World Cup goal this afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and he is the natural centerpiece of today’s 12 players to watch. Spain’s 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia headlines a four-match Sunday, with only the noon kickoff airing free on FOX. The other three games are on FS1.
12:00 PM ET: Spain vs. Saudi Arabia, FOX
Spain needed this. After a 0-0 opening draw with debutant Cabo Verde, the reigning European champion came out with clarity and intent. Yamal, who had come off the bench in Matchday 1 after managing a torn hamstring, started this one and did not waste the chance. He put Spain ahead in the 10th minute for his first World Cup goal, and Mikel Oyarzabal doubled and then tripled the lead before halftime. An own goal from Hassan Altambakti in the second half completed the 4-0 scoreline. Spain is on four points and sitting on top of Group H with Uruguay and Cabo Verde both on two.
The subplot here is Yamal’s workload. He was substituted at halftime as part of the manager’s planned management of his hamstring recovery, so the question heading into Matchday 3 against Uruguay on June 26 is how much the 18-year-old has in the tank. Spain can afford to be careful with the group stage effectively won. Pedri and the rest of the midfield gave Spain’s attack the platform it needed today; the Yamal question now shifts to the knockout rounds.

3:00 PM ET: Belgium vs. IR Iran, FS1
Belgium is becoming the puzzle of the tournament. Rudi Garcia’s side had 23 shots and an expected goals figure of 1.8 against Iran and still could not find the net. They have now gone 53 consecutive shots at this World Cup without scoring from open play, stretching back through 2022. Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand made seven saves, and Mehdi Taremi had a goal correctly ruled out by VAR after a clever free-kick routine. The 0-0 scoreline was the right result on the day, and it puts all four Group G teams on two points heading into Matchday 3.
The match was also shaped by one ugly moment: substitute Nathan Ngoy miskicked a back pass and then fouled Taremi, who was through on goal, earning a straight red card in the 66th minute. Ngoy is suspended for Matchday 3. That compounds Belgium’s problems: Jérémy Doku did not play today due to illness, and with Romelu Lukaku making his first start for club or country since June 9 of last year, Garcia is working with a shortened bench and real questions about fitness. Iran, operating under significant off-field pressure due to travel restrictions tied to the ongoing conflict, moves top of Group G on goal difference.

6:00 PM ET: Uruguay vs. Cabo Verde, FS1
Cabo Verde is the story of this World Cup, and they added another chapter in Miami. After holding Spain to a 0-0 draw in their debut, they came back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw with Uruguay. Kevin Pina opened the scoring with a powerful free kick from distance, Uruguay fought back to lead 2-1 at the half on goals from Maximiliano Araújo and Agustín Canobbio, and then substitute Hélio Varela equalized in the 61st minute, just two minutes and sixteen seconds after coming off the bench. For context: the fact sheet notes that is the fastest goal by an African substitute at the World Cup since Roger Milla for Cameroon against Russia in 1994. Uruguay had chances to win it late, but could not convert, and Marcelo Bielsa’s side sits on two points alongside Cabo Verde, with Spain already four clear at the top of Group H.

9:00 PM ET: New Zealand vs. Egypt, FS1
New Zealand hosts Egypt in Vancouver in a match that was still in progress at research time, so the result is not confirmed here. Both teams entered on one point. New Zealand, in their first World Cup since 2010, drew 2-2 with Iran in Matchday 1 behind a double from Elijah Just. Egypt drew 1-1 with Belgium. Captain Chris Wood is New Zealand’s all-time leading scorer with 45 goals in 90 caps, and a win tonight would move them into a genuine knockout position in Group G.
