Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana, born July 13, 2007, is a Spanish winger for FC Barcelona and the Spain national team, and the most precocious talent the modern game has produced. A right-footed-defying left-foot menace who cuts inside off the touchline and curls the ball into the far corner with a teenager’s nerve and a veteran’s timing, he plays the game as if the pressure that crushes other prodigies simply does not register. By the time most players are finishing youth football, Yamal had already won a European Championship, rewritten Barcelona’s century-old record books, and taken the No. 10 shirt once worn by Lionel Messi.

The breakout was instant and total. He became the youngest player ever to represent Barcelona’s first team in April 2023, the youngest goalscorer in Spanish national team history that September, and, at Euro 2024, the youngest scorer in the tournament’s history with a stunning curling equalizer against France one day before his 17th birthday. Spain won that title, Yamal was named Young Player of the Tournament, and the following season he was the central figure in Barcelona’s first-ever domestic treble under Hansi Flick. He has won the Kopa Trophy for the world’s best under-21 player in both 2024 and 2025 (the first two-time winner), and in 2025 he finished runner-up to Ousmane Dembélé for the Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious individual prize in football.

The last year delivered his first real taste of adversity. A run of groin trouble (the chronic condition known as pubalgia) and a late-season hamstring injury disrupted his 2025-26 campaign, Barcelona suffered back-to-back Champions League exits, and the scrutiny that comes with being a global superstar before turning 19 has intensified off the pitch. None of it has dimmed his output: he still posted his best goal return yet and a third La Liga title. As of June 2026, he heads into his first World Cup, in North America, as the player Spain’s hopes are built around and the favorite to finally convert “best young player” into “best player, full stop.”

People also read: Lionel Messi (Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup champion), Kylian Mbappé (World Cup winner and serial Golden Boot leader), Cristiano Ronaldo (Five-time Ballon d’Or winner and all-time leading scorer), Neymar (Brazil’s record-chasing forward and former Barcelona star)

Early Life & Education

Lamine Yamal was born on July 13, 2007, in Esplugues de Llobregat, on the western edge of greater Barcelona, to Mounir Nasraoui, a building painter from Larache in Morocco, and Sheila Ebana, a waitress from Bata in Equatorial Guinea. His parents separated when he was around three, and he split his childhood between them, with much of it spent in Rocafonda, a working-class, heavily immigrant neighborhood of Mataró up the coast from the city. Rocafonda’s postal code, 08304, would later become the most famous three numbers in Catalan football, stitched into his goal celebration, his boots, and his personal brand.

He joined Barcelona’s celebrated La Masia academy at seven and rose through its ranks as the kind of player coaches talk about in hushed tones. The leap came absurdly early. Barely into his time with the under-19s, he was training with the first team at the request of manager Xavi Hernández, and on April 29, 2023, aged 15 years, 9 months, and 16 days, he made his La Liga debut in a 4–0 win over Real Betis, becoming the youngest player ever to represent the club and breaking a record that had stood since 1922. He was still completing his compulsory secondary education at the time, and during Euro 2024 he reportedly brought his schoolwork to Germany, finishing classes online between training sessions.

His path was shaped by Barcelona’s identity as much as by any single coach. Eligible to represent Spain, Morocco, or Equatorial Guinea through his parents, he chose Spain, drawn by the dream of playing a European Championship and the better odds of one day winning a World Cup. He has been open about carrying love for Morocco regardless, a reflection of a background he wears with obvious pride rather than as a footnote.

Career Highlights and Milestones

Yamal’s rise has been a continuous demolition of “youngest ever” records, but the substance behind the milestones is what sets him apart. After that 2023 debut, he became a fixture under Xavi, then the engine of Hansi Flick’s attacking rebuild. In autumn 2023 he scored against Granada to become the youngest goalscorer in La Liga history, then added youngest-scorer records in the Supercopa de España and Copa del Rey, all before his 17th birthday. For Spain, his September 2023 debut against Georgia made him the country’s youngest senior international and, by scoring in a 7–1 win, its youngest goalscorer.

Euro 2024 turned him from a domestic phenomenon into a global one. He became the youngest player ever to feature at a European Championship, the youngest to play in a major-tournament semifinal (a record that had belonged to Pelé since 1958), and, against France in that semifinal, the youngest scorer in Euros history with a curling strike into the top corner that was later named Goal of the Tournament. One day after turning 17, he set up Nico Williams’ opener in the final as Spain beat England 2–1 for a record fourth European title. He left Germany with the Young Player of the Tournament award and a place in the Team of the Tournament.

The 2024-25 season was his masterpiece to date. Operating as Flick’s most decisive attacker, he produced 18 goals and 25 assists across all competitions, took over the No. 10 shirt, and helped Barcelona to a first-ever domestic treble: La Liga, the Copa del Rey (a 3–2 extra-time win over Real Madrid for a record 32nd title), and the Supercopa de España. He scored the curling strike that clinched the league at Espanyol, and he announced himself in Europe too, becoming the youngest player to score in a Champions League semifinal, even as Barcelona fell to Inter at that stage. That body of work made him runner-up in the 2025 Ballon d’Or behind Dembélé and earned a second straight Kopa Trophy.

The most recent chapter has been harder, and more revealing. Recurring groin problems and a late-season hamstring injury cost him chunks of 2025-26, and Barcelona again came up short in Europe, eliminated by Atlético Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals. Yet his production climbed: a career-best return in his most efficient season per minute, plus a third La Liga title, sealed in an El Clásico at the renovated Camp Nou. The numbers underline how far ahead of schedule he is. At 18, Messi made 25 appearances for Barcelona with eight goals and five assists; Yamal’s totals at the same age dwarf those, a comparison he is quick to wave away.
