Riz Ahmed

Riz Ahmed (born December 1, 1982) is a British Pakistani actor, rapper, and producer who has spent two decades refusing to pick a lane. He came up through hard, unglamorous British independents, broke into American film as a supporting player who kept stealing scenes, and then built the second half of his career on projects he originates himself. He is the rare star who treats his own visibility as raw material, and the work is better for it.

The turn came in 2014, when Nightcrawler put him opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as a desperate hire who slowly grasps what he has signed up for. Two years later he was everywhere at once: Bodhi Rook in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a tech billionaire in Jason Bourne, and Nasir Khan in HBO’s The Night Of, a performance that won him a Primetime Emmy and made him the first South Asian and first Muslim man to take an acting Emmy. Studio work followed, including Venom, and so did a growing suspicion, which he has talked about openly, that he was disappearing into stories that had no room for the kid from Wembley. His answer was to start making his own: Mogul Mowgli, which he co-wrote and produced; Sound of Metal, which earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination; and The Long Goodbye, the short film companion to his 2020 album, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film in 2022.

That instinct is now the engine of his career rather than a side project. In 2026 he arrived with two things at once: Hamlet, Aneil Karia’s stripped-down modern adaptation with Ahmed in the title role, and Bait, the Prime Video series he created, co-wrote, executive produced, and stars in, about a struggling British Pakistani actor auditioning to be the next James Bond. Bait landed him a 2026 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, his third Emmy nod overall. Next comes Alejandro G. Early Life & Education

Ahmed was born in Wembley, northwest London, to Pakistani parents of Muhajir heritage who had emigrated from Karachi in the 1970s. His father worked as a shipping broker. It was a household that took education seriously and produced a psychiatrist and a lawyer alongside the actor, and it was also a household that spoke Urdu first: Ahmed has said he only really picked up English once he started school at six.

At eleven he won a scholarship place at Merchant Taylors’ School in Northwood, where a classmate was the future broadcaster Mehdi Hasan. The scholarship bought him access and, at the same time, a permanent sense of being slightly out of position, a feeling that has followed him into almost every role he has chosen since. He has described being handed Hamlet at that school by an English teacher who spoke fluent Punjabi and who told him the play sat at the heart of the establishment he felt shut out of, and that he might recognise himself in it. He did. Thirty years later he made the film.

Oxford came next, Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Christ Church, where the culture shock pushed him toward organising club nights and cross-cultural events rather than retreating from them. Only afterward did he train formally, at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. The sequence matters: he arrived at acting having already spent years arguing about politics and writing raps under the name Riz MC, which is why his early screen work reads less like a young actor auditioning for approval and more like someone with a point to make. His first single, “Post 9/11 Blues,” and his first film, Michael Winterbottom’s The Road to Guantánamo, both landed in 2006.

Career Highlights and Milestones

The first decade was British, scrappy, and mostly about young men caught in systems larger than themselves. The Road to Guantánamo cast him as Shafiq Rasul, one of the Tipton Three. Shifty gave him a title role as a south London drug dealer over a single day and earned him a British Independent Film Award nomination. Chris Morris’s Four Lions asked him to play a would-be suicide bomber as a recognisable, funny, exasperated human being, which remains one of the more difficult things any British actor has pulled off this century. Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist handed him a full leading-man arc opposite Kate Hudson and Liev Schreiber. None of these were hits. All of them built a specific reputation: this was an actor who could hold contradiction on his face without explaining it.

Nightcrawler was the hinge. As Rick, the underpaid stringer who realises too late what his boss actually is, Ahmed supplied the film’s conscience and its dread, and American casting directors finally started returning calls. 2016 delivered the payoff in triplicate. Rogue One made him a Star Wars character with an action figure. Jason Bourne put him in a franchise tentpole. And The Night Of gave him Nasir Khan, an eight-hour slow dissolve from ordinary student to hardened inmate, and with it the Emmy, plus Golden Globe and SAG nominations and a second Emmy nod the same year for a guest turn on Girls. He was, briefly, the most in-demand British actor of his generation who had never headlined a hit.

Then he flinched, productively. By his own account, filming Jacques Audiard’s The Sisters Brothers in autumn 2018, he wondered whether he had sold out: the parts were bigger, the stories had nothing to do with him. Venom, released weeks later, made $850 million and gave him a villain, Carlton Drake, that the script barely bothered to write. His correction was structural rather than sentimental. He set up Left Handed Films and used it to originate work. Mogul Mowgli, which he co-wrote with director Bassam Tariq, put a British Pakistani rapper in a hospital bed and let the identity crisis be literal, and won him a BIFA for Best Debut Screenwriter. Sound of Metal asked him to learn drums and American Sign Language and then take away his hearing, and returned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, the first for a Muslim performer in the category, plus the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. The Long Goodbye, the twelve-minute companion film to his 2020 album, won the Academy Award outright in 2022. In 2021 he also convened the USC Annenberg study Missing and Maligned with Pillars Fund and the Ford Foundation, which found Muslim characters in speaking roles in under two percent of 200 top global films, and launched the Blueprint for Muslim Inclusion and the Pillars Artist Fellowship in response.

The current chapter is the most ambitious and the most exposed. Hamlet, directed by Aneil Karia, relocates the play to London’s wealthy South Asian elite, keeps the verse, and throws out nearly everything else, including Horatio. It premiered at Telluride in August 2025, opened in the UK in February 2026 and in North America in April, and split critics hard: admirers called Ahmed genuinely haunted and terrific, while detractors found the handheld camera claustrophobic and his delivery swallowed. The box office was small. Bait, by contrast, connected immediately. The six-episode Prime Video series, which Ahmed created, co-wrote, executive produced and leads as Shah Latif, premiered at Sundance in January 2026, went out globally on March 25, drew strong reviews, and earned him a 2026 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. In the statement he posted on the nomination, he described the moment as bittersweet because his father had recently died.
