Matthew Rhys (born November 8, 1974) is a Welsh actor who has spent two decades quietly proving that the most interesting American characters on television are often played by someone who grew up speaking Welsh in Cardiff. He is a television actor first, by design rather than accident: he watched The Sopranos as a young RADA graduate, decided the interesting work had migrated to the small screen, and pointed his career at it. That bet paid off with Philip Jennings, the exhausted KGB sleeper agent he played for six seasons on The Americans, a performance built almost entirely out of restraint and one that finally won him a Primetime Emmy in 2018.
What makes Rhys unusual is how thoroughly he has refused to settle into the register that won him the award. Since The Americans he has played a whiskey-soaked 1930s gumshoe in Perry Mason, a sneering Esquire journalist opposite Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, George Carlin in Saturday Night, Daniel Ellsberg for Steven Spielberg, and Emperor Belos in a Disney animated series. He also runs a boat charter business out of Brooklyn on a 1939 wooden cruiser he bought on eBay after too much whisky, which tells you roughly as much about him as the filmography does.
The 2026 season has made all of that hard to ignore. In July, Rhys became the first male actor this century to land lead Emmy nominations in two of the three major categories in the same year: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Apple TV’s breakout horror-comedy Widow’s Bay, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his glacial sociopath in Netflix’s The Beast in Me. He spent the previous autumn touring Wales in a one-man play about Richard Burton. It is, by any measure, the loudest year of a career he has largely spent trying not to make noise.

Early Life & Education
Rhys was born Matthew Rhys Evans in Cardiff on November 8, 1974, into a household where Welsh was the first language and school was conducted in it. He attended Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd in Whitchurch and then Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in Llandaff North, both Welsh-medium schools, and the language stuck hard enough that he now speaks only Welsh to his own son. He has said the trigger for wanting to act at all was Richard Burton: a boy from Pontrhydyfen who blazed the trail and proved the route existed.
The turn toward performance came fast and slightly absurdly. At 17, after playing Elvis Presley in a school musical, he applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and got in, arriving on a Patricia Rothermere Scholarship awarded in 1993 and graduating in 1996. Even before he left, work found him: a recurring role in the BBC police series Backup and a part in House of America. He then went home to Cardiff to act in his own language in the Welsh film Bydd yn Wrol, and won a BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actor for it.
What followed was not a straight line to Hollywood but a decade of picking up whatever was interesting and wherever it was. A colonial costume drama in New Zealand. Julie Taymor’s Titus opposite Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange. The world premiere stage adaptation of The Graduate at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End opposite Kathleen Turner, at 25. Two films back to back with Jonathan Pryce. A season with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2004 playing Edmund in King Lear and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, with Macduff at the Young Vic in between. He was, in the classical sense, thoroughly trained before American television ever got hold of him.
Career Highlights and Milestones
The American chapter began in 2006 with Brothers & Sisters, the ABC family drama that moved Rhys to Santa Monica and kept him there for five seasons as Kevin Walker, a gay lawyer whose romantic life the show treated with unusual seriousness for network television at the time. It was a good job rather than a defining one, but it did two things that mattered: it established that he could hold an American accent for years at a stretch, and it put him inside the US casting system. He has been candid about the discomfort of that period, describing agents telling him to audition as an American outright because a Welsh accent invited producers to listen for the slip.
The Americans changed the scale of everything. From 2013 to 2018, Rhys played Philip Jennings, one half of a KGB sleeper couple raising two children in the Washington suburbs alongside Keri Russell’s Elizabeth. The role demanded a small library of disguises and accents, sustained physical violence, and a marriage that was both a cover story and, gradually, real. What Rhys found in it was a man visibly corroding from the inside, and he played that corrosion with a stillness that made the occasional eruption land like a car crash. He was nominated for the lead-actor Emmy three times and won on the third try, for the final season, in 2018. He picked up a Critics’ Choice Television Award the following January. Along the way he also collected an Emmy nomination for a single-episode guest turn on Girls, playing a predatory novelist in “American Bitch,” which remains one of the more unnerving half-hours of that show.
He then did the least obvious thing available, which was to take over an American institution. HBO’s Perry Mason, which ran two seasons from 2020 to 2023, recast Erle Stanley Gardner’s crusading defense attorney as a broken 1930s private investigator living on whiskey, cigarettes and unresolved war damage. Robert Downey Jr. had originally been attached; Rhys inherited the part and executive produced. It earned him a fourth Emmy nomination and a third Golden Globe nod, and it did not entirely work as a series, which is worth saying plainly. The show never quite reconciled its noir mood with the procedural machinery the title implies, and HBO ended it after two seasons. Rhys was the most convincing thing in it, which is a familiar pattern in his filmography: the vehicle is uneven, the performance is not.
The current run is the strangest and best of his career. In November 2025 he appeared opposite Claire Danes in Netflix’s limited series The Beast in Me as Nile Jarvis, a real estate scion widely presumed to have murdered his first wife, a part Rhys played with deliberate underuse. He has said he built it by reading Jon Ronson and Janet Malcolm and by taking his director’s note that enough had already been said. Five months later came Widow’s Bay, Katie Dippold’s Apple TV horror-comedy directed by Hiro Murai, in which he plays Tom Loftis, the cowardly mayor of a cursed New England island trying to sell it as the next Martha’s Vineyard. It became the breakout of the spring, collected 19 Emmy nominations on its first try despite only seven of its ten episodes qualifying, and was renewed for a second season. In between, in November 2025, Rhys returned to the Welsh stage for the first time in more than twenty years to play Richard Burton in Mark Jenkins’s one-man play Playing Burton, directed by Bartlett Sher, touring Wales and playing two nights at the Old Vic as a fundraiser for Michael Sheen’s newly founded Welsh National Theatre. The Times of London called the performance stunning. It transfers to Lincoln Center Theater for his American stage debut in the 2026-27 season.

Net Worth, Income, & Lifestyle
| Net Worth (2026) | Public estimates vary widely and are not independently verifiable. Aggregator sites circulate figures in the region of $12 million along with unsourced per-episode salary claims, but Rhys has never disclosed a confirmed figure and none of these numbers traces to a documented filing or reported deal. Treat single-number claims as unconfirmed. |
| Income Sources | Lead acting work in television and film, executive producer credits on Perry Mason and Widow’s Bay, a long-running voice-acting strand across animation, stage work, his production company Patagonia (founded 2011), and the Moveable Feast NY boat charter business. |
| Properties & Assets | Most financial and property detail is kept private. The one publicly documented asset is Rarebit, a 1939 Wheeler Playmate cruiser bought on eBay for a reported $30,000 and restored over roughly four years at many multiples of that price. He has also backed community share offers that saved two Welsh village pubs. |
| Lifestyle | New York based and conspicuously unglamorous about it. He is more likely to be found in a Brooklyn marina than at a party, keeps his family almost entirely out of public view, and treats his Welsh-language work and Welsh causes as an ongoing obligation rather than a press angle. |

Trivia & Lesser-Known Facts
- Welsh is his first language. He was educated entirely through Welsh at primary and secondary level, and said in 2018 that he speaks to his son only in Welsh so the boy will understand it.
- He auditioned for James Bond in the mid-2000s, in the round that eventually produced Casino Royale and Daniel Craig. By his own account to The Times, he sank it by joking that the new 007 should have a limp and an eyepatch.
- In 2017 he saw a 1939 Wheeler Playmate for sale on eBay while drinking whisky, noticed it was already named Rarebit after the Welsh dish, decided this was fate, and bought it sight unseen for a reported $30,000. It is one of only four documented Playmates left. The same model and era as Hemingway’s Pilar, it now runs charters out of Brooklyn under the name Moveable Feast.
- He was admitted to the Gorsedd of the Bards at the 2008 National Eisteddfod for services to the Welsh language, taking the bardic name Matthew Tâf. Aberystwyth University made him an honorary fellow the same year.
- He has spent more than a decade trying to get a film made about Owain Glyndŵr, the Welsh prince who led a rebellion against England beginning in 1400, and bought the rights to Operation Julie, an account of one of the largest LSD busts in Welsh history, back in 2010. Neither has been produced.
- He co-hosted the travel and drinks series The Wine Show from 2016 to 2020, which is where a good deal of his public persona as an amiable enthusiast comes from.
