Early Life & Education
Segel was born in January 1980 to Jillian Segel, a homemaker, and Alvin Segel, a lawyer, and grew up in the Pacific Palisades with an older brother, Adam, and a younger sister, Alison. His father is Jewish and his mother is of English, Scottish, Irish, and French descent, and Segel has described the resulting childhood in terms that read now like an origin story for a career built on outsiders. He attended St. Matthew’s Parish School, an Episcopal school, while also going to Hebrew school and having a Bar Mitzvah, and he later told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that being the Jewish kid at one and the Christian kid at the other taught him early that everyone wants to sort people into groups.
He went to Harvard-Westlake for high school, where the more obvious future was athletic. At 6 feet 4 inches he played on the 1996 and 1997 CIF state champion boys’ basketball teams, won a school slam dunk contest, and picked up the nickname “Dr. Dunk,” all while backing up the team’s star center, future NBA player Jason Collins. The turn away from that path was public enough that the Los Angeles Daily News ran a story about it in October 1996 under a headline about forsaking hoops for acting.
The acting itself started at the Palisades Playhouse and in school productions. Segel has said the performance that changed things was a high school staging of Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story, which put him in front of a casting executive at 18. He never went to university. Can’t Hardly Wait arrived in 1998, Judd Apatow cast him in Freaks and Geeks the following year, and the classroom stopped being relevant.

Freaks and Geeks lasted eighteen episodes and has outlived most of what was on NBC in 1999. Segel played Nick Andopolis with an earnestness that was faintly alarming for a teen comedy, and he composed the song his character sings to Lindsay Weir himself, an early tell about where his instincts actually pointed. And in 2007, Apatow put him in Knocked Up, which opened the door to writing his own vehicle. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) cost $30 million, grossed $105.8 million worldwide, and worked because Segel put genuinely embarrassing autobiography on screen: he really had been broken up with while naked, and he really had written a Dracula musical for puppets. He built both into the script. The puppets were made by the Jim Henson Company, and the experience gave him the nerve to walk into Disney with a pitch to revive The Muppets.
Disney said yes, warily. Grant, André Benjamin, and Eve Lindley. It was his first writing since Sex Tape, and it was not a hit. It was, unmistakably, his.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022 to 2023) gave him Paul Westhead, the literature-quoting Lakers coach, and reminded people he could hold a scene without being likeable. Then Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein brought him Shrinking, and the two halves of the career finally fused. Segel co-created the series and stars as Jimmy Laird, a therapist who responds to his wife’s death by abandoning professional distance entirely.
