Hailee Steinfeld (born December 11, 1996) is an American actor and singer who arrived fully formed and has spent the years since proving the debut was no fluke. At 14, she went toe to toe with Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon in the Coen brothers’ True Grit and walked away with an Academy Award nomination, a performance so composed and quick-witted that it reset expectations for what a teenage actor could carry. She has been building on it ever since, moving between studio franchises, prestige drama, animated blockbusters, and a genuine pop career without ever looking like she is stretching.

She is hard to file under one heading, which is part of the appeal. Steinfeld anchored a coming-of-age classic as the prickly, painfully real Nadine in The Edge of Seventeen, voiced Gwen Stacy across the Spider-Verse films, played a 19th-century poet with punk energy in Apple TV+’s Dickinson, and joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. Alongside the acting, she signed with Republic Records and turned out multi-platinum singles like “Love Myself” and “Starving,” racking up billions of streams. Few performers her age have moved this freely across mediums and made each one stick.

The latest chapter has been her loudest. In 2025 she played Mary in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, a role that pushed her into genuinely new territory and landed in the middle of one of the year’s biggest cultural moments. It was a reminder that the kid from True Grit has quietly grown into a leading actor with range to spare, and that she tends to do her best work when the material demands she dig in.

Early Life & Education

Hailee Steinfeld was born in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles and raised in nearby Thousand Oaks, California. She is the younger of two children of Cheri, an interior designer, and Peter Steinfeld, a personal trainer, and she grew up around the performing arts and athletics in roughly equal measure. Her paternal uncle is the fitness personality and actor Jake Steinfeld, and her maternal great-uncle, Larry Domasin, was a child actor, so the idea of working young in front of a camera was never foreign to the family.

She started early. Steinfeld appeared in commercials and short films as a child before landing her first television credit, a 2007 episode of the Fox sitcom Back to You. The real turning point came at 14, when she beat out thousands of young hopefuls in a nationwide search to play Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers’ True Grit. It was her feature film debut, and it asked her to hold the screen against seasoned actors while delivering reams of fast, formal dialogue. She did it with a steadiness that critics found startling in a newcomer.

Because her career took off so young, her education ran parallel to her work rather than the other way around. Steinfeld has spoken candidly about not having the conventional high school experience her older brother, Griffin, had, missing the prom-and-homecoming version of growing up while gaining a very different one on film sets. By her own account, she does not feel cheated by the trade. The on-set apprenticeship became its own kind of schooling, and she has carried that early discipline through nearly two decades of work.

Career Highlights and Milestones

The True Grit nomination opened doors, but Steinfeld spent her late teens doing the harder work of building an actual career rather than coasting on a single breakout. She took varied roles in films like Begin Again, Romeo & Juliet, and Gavin Hood’s sci-fi adaptation Ender’s Game, testing different registers and figuring out what she was good at. The results were uneven, as early careers often are, but the throughline was a willingness to keep trying things rather than repeat herself.

Two 2015 projects changed her trajectory at once. She joined the Pitch Perfect franchise as Emily Junk, and her a cappella turn in Pitch Perfect 2 doubled as an audition for a music career: it led directly to a deal with Republic Records. The following year she delivered what many still consider her finest performance, playing the misanthropic, self-sabotaging Nadine in Kelly Fremon Craig’s The Edge of Seventeen. The film earned rave reviews and Steinfeld a Golden Globe nomination, and it confirmed she could carry a movie as its emotional center, not just hold her own in an ensemble.

From there she leaned into scale and reinvention. She starred as Charlie Watson in Bumblebee, the warmest and best-reviewed entry in the Transformers universe, and voiced Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, an animated landmark she has since reprised. On television, she played Emily Dickinson across three seasons of Apple TV+’s Dickinson, a wild, anachronistic take on the poet that she also produced. She voiced Vi in Netflix’s acclaimed Arcane and stepped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye, later turning up in The Marvels and the animated What If…?. Then came Sinners in 2025, Ryan Coogler’s original vampire epic, where her performance as Mary marked a clear step into adult, leading-actor territory and arrived inside a genuine box-office and awards-season phenomenon.
