Anne Hathaway (born November 12, 1982) is an American actress whose career has been defined by a willingness to keep stretching the shape of it. She arrived in 2001 as a Disney teen princess, walked away from that lane on purpose, won an Oscar singing through tears in a Tom Hooper musical, and then survived a stretch of the internet’s worst behavior to come out on the other side as one of the most sought-after leading women working today.

After breaking through in The Princess Diaries and quickly pivoting to adult drama with Brokeback Mountain and The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway built a body of work that pings between commercial spectacle and prestige cinema with unusual ease. She has carried Christopher Nolan films (The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar), anchored a Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winning turn in Les Misérables, voiced a Spix’s macaw in a billion-dollar animated franchise, headlined a heist comedy with an all-female ensemble, and produced indies through her company Somewhere Pictures. Few actors of her generation have moved that fluently between genre, register, and audience.

In 2026, the spotlight is back on her in a way it has not been since the Les Mis awards run. Five films (Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, Flowervale Street, and Verity) are landing in a single calendar year, and the so-called “Hathaissance” is no longer a meme but a working description of where she sits in the culture.

Early Life & Education

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born in Brooklyn on November 12, 1982, the middle child of Gerald Hathaway, a labor attorney, and Kate McCauley Hathaway, a former stage actress. The family moved to Millburn, New Jersey, when Anne was six. Her path into performance was almost ambient: she watched her mother play Fantine on the first national tour of Les Misérables at the age of eight, and the spell took.

Hathaway sang soprano with the All-Eastern U.S. High School Honors Chorus at Carnegie Hall in the late 1990s, and acted in school plays at Millburn High School and at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was the first teenager admitted into the Barrow Group Theater Company’s acting program. Her formal education continued at Vassar College and later New York University, but she missed her first college semester to film The Princess Diaries and never finished her degree.

She has been candid that the path to acting was not all promise. As a teenager she wrestled with depression and anxiety, and she has framed those years as foundational to the empathy she now brings to roles. The early stage training, especially the singing, would pay off two decades later when Tom Hooper put her in front of a camera and asked her to sing live on set.

Career Highlights and Milestones

Hathaway’s breakthrough came at 18 with The Princess Diaries (2001), Garry Marshall’s lighter-than-air Disney comedy that grossed roughly $108 million and turned her into an instant teen-movie fixture. She returned for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) and Ella Enchanted (2004), but she was already plotting an exit from the tiara lane. Brokeback Mountain (2005) was the pivot, a small but pointed adult role in Ang Lee’s Best Picture-nominated drama, followed by The Devil Wears Prada (2006), where she went toe-to-toe with Meryl Streep and grossed over $326 million worldwide. The transition was complete.

The next stretch was where the prestige built. She earned her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for Rachel Getting Married (2008), Jonathan Demme’s raw family drama, and her commercial reach widened through Get Smart (2008), Bride Wars (2009), Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Love & Other Drugs (2010). Then came 2012, the year that reshaped her standing in the industry. She played Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which crossed $1 billion globally, and Fantine in Hooper’s Les Misérables, where she lost 25 pounds, cut her hair on camera, and sang “I Dreamed a Dream” in a single unbroken take. The performance won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, plus the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG.

What followed was harder than the awards run made it look. The Oscar win came alongside an internet pile-on so persistent that “Hathahaters” became a coined term, and she has since been open about how it choked off her career for a stretch. Nolan, who had given her Dark Knight and Interstellar (2014), kept hiring her. Producer roles, indie work, and prestige TV (the Apple miniseries WeCrashed in 2022) kept her active. By the time The Idea of You (2024) became Amazon Prime Video’s most popular original film of the year, the second act had clearly taken hold. Mother Mary (2026) with David Lowery, The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026), and The Odyssey (2026) with Nolan have stacked the calendar in a way that finally looks less like comeback and more like steady-state stardom.

She has produced through Somewhere Pictures (formerly Likely Story) since 2014, executive producing WeCrashed, Eileen (2023), She Came to Me (2023), and the upcoming Verity. She is a UN Women goodwill ambassador and a board member of the Lollipop Theatre Network.

Trivia & Lesser-Known Facts

  • She trained as a soprano before acting took over and famously sang “I Dreamed a Dream” live on set in Les Misérables rather than to a pre-recorded track, an approach Tom Hooper made standard for the entire production.
  • She is named after William Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, a piece of trivia she shares with the actress’s centuries-older namesake.
  • Her relationship with the Catholic Church changed at age fifteen when her older brother came out as gay; her family moved to the Episcopal Church and later left organized religion altogether.
  • She turned down roles for years to avoid being typecast as a “princess” type, including reportedly losing out on the lead in The Phantom of the Opera (2004) to Emmy Rossum due to a Princess Diaries 2 scheduling conflict.
  • She produces through her company Somewhere Pictures (formerly Likely Story), and her producing credits include Eileen, She Came to Me, The Idea of You, and the upcoming Verity.
  • She has been more than five years sober as of 2024, a fact she revealed in passing during a New York Times interview rather than as a planned announcement.

Quotes

“All the advice that you’re given is to protect yourself. ‘Everybody’s dangerous and everybody’s trying to get something from you.’ People were advising me that I armor myself and keep that distance, and that I have two selves. I found that terribly confusing so I don’t do it that way. I’m not armored.”

– Anne Hathaway, Vanity Fair (April 2024)

“A lot of people wouldn’t give me roles because they were so concerned about how toxic my identity had become online. I had an angel in Christopher Nolan, who did not care about that and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve had in one of the best films that I’ve been a part of.”

– Anne Hathaway, Vanity Fair (April 2024)

“I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober. That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift.”

– Anne Hathaway, The New York Times (April 2024)

“It’s one thing to have dreams. It’s another thing to have somebody who helps you achieve them. I absolutely would not be able to have achieved what I’ve done without my husband.”

– Anne Hathaway, People (April 2026)
